Leonardo DiCaprio loves the planet Earth, and the biggest cause he’s championed over and over and over and over again is the environment. He believes climate change is a massive problem for the world and he does whatever he can whenever he can to help people treat our planet better. That might mean meeting with President Obama, and it might mean producing a Captain Planet movie.
The latter is definitely happening, reports The Hollywood Reporter. DiCaprio’s Appian Way production company is teaming up with Paramount to turn Earth’s defender into a major motion picture, and they’ve hired Glen Powell, who you may know from Everybody Wants Some!! and Scream Queens, to write it. Powell will co-write with his writing partner Jono Matt.
It’s unclear if Powell will also star in the movie because he’s an actor, but we can probably start fan casting Captain Planet himself, huh? The obvious choice is Don Cheadle, but there’s something about John Travolta as Captain Planet that excites me. I guess there are a bunch of kids who have cool powers like wind and fire (and a kid who has… heart) but oh well.
Before I go any further, I should let you know that the movie is a subversive take on Captain Planet. They’re doing The Lego Movie and 22 Jump Street thing, where they mock what the movie is while making the movie. It could be fun, but it could also not work out because Phil Lord and Chris Miller are the masters of that.
So, are you ready for a movie where Captain Planet is a has been who needs the kids more than they need him? I hope so, because that’s seriously what this movie is about. Here’s hoping they find some great comedic minds to direct. [THR]
